News Cast (7/2/09)

PBR's John Poister is back with the latest local, regional and national news updates. In today's news: Government says 467,000 people lost jobs across the country in June. A surprisingly sharp increase from May. Mike Kauffelt at Bill Few Associates in Pittsburgh says the high number surprised Wall Street which responded negatively. The AAA says fewer people are planning to travel over the 4th of July holiday weekend this year compared to last year. However, the decline this year was less than the decline posted last year during the peak of the gas price run up. Get ready to see traffic jams on the Ohio River. Beginning Monday the Army Corps of Engineers plans to being renovation work on the Emsworth and Dashshields locks. It will take tow boat operators longer to get their tows through the locks. Delays of 15 or more hours are expected. It appears all is clear for work to resume on the Hilton Pittsburgh hotel. Work had stopped because of payment issues. City and county officials would like to see an exterior covering on the Hilton's addition before the G20 summit convenes in September.

News Cast (7/1/09)

PBR's John Poister is back with the latest local, regional and national news updates. In today's news: No new state budget. The state begins the new fiscal year with no spending plan in place. Republican and Democratic legislative leaders continue to negotiate. They will study the current budget proposal over the weekend and meet again with Governor Rendell on Monday. Pittsburgh's population drops by an estimated 1.038 between July 2007 and July 2008. That means it's now the 60th largest city in the country. City officials point to the fact that the latest decline is the smallest this decade. Pittsburgh hotels coming off a record year are expecting a drop of almost 6% in revenue per available room. It's a much smaller decline than the national average of -18%. Speaking of declines: The AAA reports that gas prices fell by 8 cents per gallon last week.

PBR's John Poister is back with the latest local, regional and national news updates. In today's news: G20 partnership-- group of 20 corporations, schools, and other entities say they have raised $500,000 to help in efforts to prepare the city for the G20 summit influx in September. The state says the Pittsburgh region's unemployment rate continues to rise. It reached 7.5% in may. However, it is still lower than the state and national rates. The area continues to lose valuable manufacturing jobs. PNC Financial economist Robert Dye says despite a decline in June's consumer confidence he still believes the economy will move out of its current doldrums by late fall and begin to show some growth in early 2010.

PBR's John Poister is back with the latest local, regional and national news updates. In today's news: Disgraced financier Bernard Maydoff sentenced to 150 years in prison. Century 3 Mall named to a national list of endangered shopping malls compiled by US News and World Report. The list uses occupancy and sales per square foot as measurements. Simon properties which owns the mall did not return phone calls. A group of fiscally conservative Democrats say they will hold out against a state personal tax income increase. Governor Rendell is expected to meet with GOP leaders his afternoon.
